About Don’t Forget to Remember
In this engaging board book with whimsical art, singer/songwriter Ellie Holcomb reminds young readers (and the adults in their lives) not to forget the wonders of God’s love.
I’m the oldest of five kids and one of my little brothers was extremely forgetful. He left something behind almost every day we went to school and would pipe up from the back seat of the car saying, “Mom! I forgot to remember my lunch today.” I always thought it was the cutest thing, and it became one of those phrases our family repeated over the years, “I forgot to remember!”
As a mom of three, there are so many things I forget...and it’s not just lunch boxes or backpacks...a lot of days, I forget to remember what’s true. On the days I’m at the end of myself, on the days I’ve lost my patience and my car keys, on the days I didn’t make a dent in the to do list that seems to endlessly grow, I need to remember the truth of God’s mercy and love for me. I wanted to write a book that would help my own forgetful heart and my children’s precious hearts remember what is true.
Psalm 19 largely inspired this book. It says that the heavens declare the glories of God. I hope Don’t Forget To Remember will help children and the adults in their lives pay attention to the song that creation is singing each day. There are countless clues that point us to the truth, and my hope is that this book will be like a treasure map to help us all discover and remember the wonders of God’s love for us.
At the end of the day, what do you want your kids to remember is true? My hope is that Don’t Forget To Remember will be like a map that children and the adults in their lives can read to find their way back to the treasures of remembering the wonders of God’s love for us.
About Sing: Remembering Songs
At one point I thought that I’d just write a song for the book and not include any other songs or try to make another EP. I’m a mom of three now and the days are busy and full. I kept thinking, “I’m not sure I have time or margin to write another kids record.” So I prayed. I told God, “if you want me to write another kids EP, I need You to make it really clear!” THAT VERY night, my producer Nathan Dugger emailed me two different song ideas that I LOVED. God of All Nations made me get up out of my chair and dance around the kitchen. It carries so much of the truth I want my kids to know… that we are ALL God’s children, and that we all have a reason to sing about the love of the God who made us. I wrote “Wherever I Go” that night in my kitchen with my kids asleep upstairs to the wonderful musical idea that Nathan sent over.
The other songs on the record were inspired by Psalms and creation. My hope is that these songs would help kids and the adults in their lives remember how deeply they are loved by the God who made them. I forget what’s true a lot of days, but songs get stuck in my head! My prayer for these songs is that they would help the beautiful truth of God’s love and companionship get stuck in kids’ heads and hearts!
